These are my first concepts for my level! They're mostly rough pencil sketches as it's early days and I don't want to go into too much detail yet. I've also created an initial layout for the station. From here I can continue concepting and working out colour schemes and assets that need creating.

Today I payed a visit to St. Dunstan in the East, a church in London that was heavily bombed during the Blitz in World War II. What's special about this church is that rather than rebuild or repair the building the City of London decided to turn the remains into a public garden. While it was opened in the 70's it had recently just been re-opened due to maintenance and improvements and it was well-worth a visit. It was particularly interesting to see the climbing plants and the ways in which they traversed the church architecture the effects they'd had on the building over time; roots on the walls, green patches. This trip was very useful going forward because it's a similar kind of theme to the station I'm creating; an environment that has been damaged and left over time to decay and sprout greenery (even though it's a public garden and it's meant to be there). On the weekend I had the chance to visit the making of Harry Potter at the Warner Bros. Studios. The tour basically included visiting filming sets, props, designs etc. and although the trip wasn't intended for research, I ended up finding a lot of inspiration from the train station sets. Even though they're not real all of the things inside were obviously based off of real life places and objects etc. The thing I found most useful about the train station sets were the objects and props inside the station. I now have a much better idea of what to put inside my scene besides the actual structure and possibly a train and/or carriage.
Yesterday I took a trip to the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden! This was an incredibly resourceful and insightful visit as it contained a lot of very relevant exhibits and information. I took a tonne of pictures which will be very useful throughout the stages of development on the project. I few things I managed to gather reference for were; Countless London Underground posters and advertisements, old tickets, Old London Underground trains and carriages, station signs, seat materials, station benches and plenty more!
The best bits of reference material I managed to gather was getting to go inside and around lots of old London Underground trains and carriages with my camera. This meant that I could get a good idea of the size and general feel of the train and carriages along with being able to get pictures of the interiors and exteriors. Hopefully more useful research trips to come! |
