Today I modelled the roof beam that arches over the station. The design of the beam (and detailing) is based on the station I originally found; Kensington Station (which later became High Street Kensington Station), and a current day station which I found while researching; Notting Hill Gate Station (both pictured below). After putting the beam into my level blockout and repeating it accordingly I'm glad with the outcome even though there are no roof panels on it yet.I've also created an asset list now where I can update my progress on everything in the project (I can still add in more things if I feel I need to) that needs doing. I'm hoping this will make me better prepared and organised! I've added sections for whether things have been: modelled, unwrapped, textured, and then final asset in UE4. Once a section is complete I will fill the relevant box green and if it's in progress I'll fill it orange.
Using the modular wall I made along with the BSP brushes I've stated creating a blockout for my level. I had to do quite a bit of moving and scaling etc. to make sure that I was happy with the sizes of things when playing the level but I'm now happy with the scale. The boxes in the middle of the tracks represent a rough size for a train carriage and the boxes at the top of the level are the ticket / information boxes. Even though the blockout isn't finished (I plan to start modelling or making a rough model for the roof beams and roof panels soon!) I'm starting to get a good understanding of things that need to be modelled and textured which will really help out when I start creating an asset list (which I will also start making very soon!)
From the concepts I did last week I modelled the luggage trunk and imported it into my UE4 scene. I think the smoothing might be a bit messed up on it but I plan to fix that at a later date (probably when I get round to UV unwrapping and texturing). Continuing my concepting, I've sketched some weeds that will grow inside the station (probably around the tracks and in cracks). I've also drawn up a segment of a roof beam that will arch across the roof of the building from one wall to another. The luggage trunk is one of the props I can place in the level with a possibility to have different versions of it (a set of the same model with different textures?).
Today I modelled the modular wall I designed. I then put the wall into UE4 to test out how it looked when tiled and was pleased with the results. I will soon be using this wall to block out and further plan / alter my level in UE4.
I've designed an initial concept for a modular station wall that I can tile to form the main structure of the station. I can then make different versions of it with varying levels of damage so I can interchange parts of the stations walls to break up repetition. I've also done a quick concept for the platform dividers found in the middle platform of the station (shown in my detailed concepts).
Following on from my research trips and initial concepts and plans I created these two pieces of concept art. In the end I decided to go with the idea of creating a decaying station rather than a station in working condition. However another question arose while creating these pieces.... what kind of weather do I want the scene to have?
One option I decided on was to have a evening sunset where light is filtering through the broken structure of the station. The other was to stick to the kind of gloomy theme and have a dark sky and rain falling through the holes in the roof. Although it is possible to have dynamic weather I'm not sure if I'd be able to pull it off. |
